Course Title: Advanced Computer Art

Software Needed: Maya, After Effects, and others as needed
Course Description: In the following class students will learn how to use the program Maya and construct 3d models from start to finish. Students will also get a firm understanding of the materials, lighting, and basic rendering. The students will be evaluated on how well they grasp the basics of modeling and design principles.
Students will also have links to websites and online videos that will help them better learn the interface and basic use of Maya.
Students are responsible for learning digital software in order to complete the assignments.
Demonstrations of the software are meant to be introductory. In addition to regularly scheduled class time, students are expected to further enhance their understanding of 3D computer graphic techniques and software by working through assigned readings.
Credit Value: 3 credits
Core Course Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course student should be able to:
Model hard and Organic surfaces
Basic Shading Networks
General understanding of UV space
Painting Textures
3d lighting principles
Basic multi-pass rendering and compositing
Basic 3d camera techniques
Recommended Texts: Mastering Autodesk Maya 2011, Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting
The Digital Tutors DVD- Collection in the Slide Library on the 2nd floor of the AJ building.
The Gnomon Workshop DVD Collection in Braken Library.
Materials and Supplies: Note taking material, flash drives, Portable hard drive, blank CDs or CDR or some type of media storage device.
Making Back-ups: Students are responsible for all digital work they create. Never rely on the local computer HD or Desktop in the art labs or the Art Lab Share Server for any overnight storage. The Art Lab Share Server will be wiped every Sunday afternoon. The local HD and Desktop on each computer in BC will be wiped clean on a daily basis. The workspace drives on the computers will not be touched until the end of the semester over the breaks for cleanup. The loss of class work due to the lack of back up is not a viable excuse in this class. Hard drives go corrupt and flash drives break, expect this and plan ahead for it. Always backup everything and do not leave all your files in one location.

Attendance Policy: Students are required to attend all classes and critiques. Students have three excused absences after the third their grade will drop a grade level with every additional absence. For example, if a student has a B and misses their fourth class they cannot get anything higher than a B- from then on. Class attendance is 30% of final grade.
Grading Scale: Based on Animation Industry Standards
A = You excelled and added techniques not taught by instructor
B = Did the work asked for with acceptable results
C = Did the minimally accepted work and attended all classes
D = Unacceptable work but attended all class and completed all homework
F = Unacceptable work, unacceptable homework and unacceptable attendance
Final Project grade: based on a 25 point scale
1-4 F
5-9 D
10-14 C
15-19 B
20-25 A
Homework: Points based
Turned in on time and complete = 2 points
Turned in late or on time and incomplete = 1 point
Not turned in at all or late and incomplete = 0 points
Homework is worth 25% of the final grade
Naming in scenes: If all objects, textures or shaders are not named there will be a 2- point loss off final project, and half a point loss on homework assignments
Final Grade break down:
Attendance and Participation = 30%
Homework = 30%
Final Project = 40%
Estimated Homework Hours Per Week: (4-6 hours per week)
Classroom Policies:
- No food allowed in class at any time. Drinks in reseal able containers are allowed within provided area of lab
- Edible items brought to class must be finished out side of class or will be thrown out.
- Please log out of machines when class is dismissed. This makes it easier for lab techs to update machines when classes are finished.
- Break times are scheduled by the instructor at appropriate intervals.
- No private software is to be brought to lab or loaded onto school computers.
- No software games are allowed in lab
- Headphones are required to listen to music but not permitted during lectures.
- Any student who has special needs that may affect his or her performance in this class is asked to identify his/her needs to the instructor in private by the end of the first day of class. Any resulting class performance problems that may arise for those who do not identify their needs will not receive any special grading considerations.
Student Evaluation Methods of Assessment:
- Class time spent being productive and interacting in a manner to better their understanding of the material.
- Grading will be based on a point system.
- Points for each assignment will be posted on grade book for students convenience.
- All work must be handed in on predetermined deadlines.
- All work handed in late will receive zero points.
- Work handed in on time can be redone with approval of instructor.
- “Absolutely no work will be accepted after the final class.”
16 Week Schedule
Week 1
Tuesday- First day of school: go over syllabus, walk through of the class, basics of interface
Thursday- Give run down of interface and controls, have students model a fork in class going over concepts, give first assignment(Solar System)
Week 2
Tuesday- Studio Time (time to answer questions and review interface if needed)
Thursday-have students model a chair(get comfortable with interface) Solar System assignment due
Week 3
Tuesday- Start polygon hard surface modeling- project wine stopper
Thursday- Lecture: Project set, and Folder Usage- 3 sketches Assign hard surface modeling project
Week 4
Tuesday- Lecture on hard surface modeling(wine stopper), Studio Time-3 sketches due
Thursday- In class work time, Time to answer questions if need be
Week 5
Tuesday- Start lecture on Organic modeling, Studio Time, Assign organic modeling- 3 sketches
Thursday- Wine Stopper due, Organic modeling lecture
Week 6
Tuesday- UV Lecture- Assign UV organic model
Thursday- Studio Time, 3 sketches due
Week 7
Tuesday- Due UV's, lecture on basic 3 point lighting
Thursday- start building organic model from sketches
